The Future of Triathlon

More than 20 years ago, Triathlon Hall of Fame member and YouTube personality Bob Babbitt shared a simple truth: if we want more people to try triathlon, we need to help them feel comfortable in the water.

Richelle Love and the team at Wild Rose Women’s Events in Calgary have taken that message to heart. This fall, they hosted the very first women’s-only triathlon at a Vancouver YMCA—a welcoming event designed to build confidence and community. The photo above beautifully captures the spirit of the day.

Wild Rose handed off a couple of race entries to Fitspeek. Fitspeek handed off one of the entries to Michaela Khan and she is this week’s guest on Fitspeek.

Michaela is a modern-day Renaissance woman. She’s close to wrapping up her PhD on running injuries, and when she’s not deep in research at UBC, she’s leading run and cycling groups across the Lower Mainland.

In this episode, we talk about her experience at the Wild Rose Indoor Triathlon, why running after 50 won’t destroy your knees, and her days as a competitive squash player. Hit play for 30 minutes of high-energy swim/bike/run/research goodness.

Fitspeek 223: Queen of the Mountains (and More) — Deb Parker.

Like many of us in the endurance sports world, Deb didn’t grow up as a typical high school jock.

In fact, back in Creston, her parents didn’t encourage sports at all — but they were big on yardwork. Weeding the garden? Absolutely. Signing up for track and field? Not so much.

After high school, Deb explored running and cycling — more for fun than competition. But where she truly stood out was in powerlifting, setting nothing less than a Canadian record.

Tune in to hear about Deb’s journey: from reluctant runner, to triathlete, to one of the top age-group cyclists on the international stage. Hit play below to hear her inspiring story.
