Fitspeek 227: The Ultra Cycling Edition

As we enter the dark season in Western Canada, I’ve got a group of athletes guaranteed to motivate and inspire you to do something EPIC.

The guy on the left is Craig Premack. In addition to being an accomplished musician and producer, he’s an exceptional athlete who is only getting better. He set a personal best Ironman a few weeks back at the age of 66!

The guy in the middle is one of the world’s original ultra triathlon athletes. Nick Mallett is a tireless mental health advocate and is currently riding around a big chunk of Australia to raise funds for the Blue Tree Project.

The guy on the right is now enjoying all of the joys of fatherhood and living in the Kootenays. Svein Tuft also used to be a Tour De France guy and was second at the 2008 World Time Trial Championships.

What unites these guys is their passion for long-distance cycling—and we mean long: hundreds of kilometres at a time.

So why spend countless hours on a bike, through rain, darkness, and blistering sun? We’ve got the answer to that—and much more.

Naturally, there are benefits to long-distance cycling; the fitness gains are pretty obvious, but Craig, Nick, and Svein also explain how those rides (mainly solo) give them special powers in everyday life. Some great storytelling and insights by a trio of inspirational dudes make for a great listen while you are on the trainer, trail, or in the car. Press play for one hour of inspiration.

You can help out Nick and the cause by following the link on the Blue Tree.

And if you are looking to try some gravel adventures, Svein is your go-to-guy in the Kootenays. Ride with a legend and kick start a new lust for life!

It’s a unique format that features: a 10 minute swim (swim toys allowed!), a 20 minute bike (indoors on a spin bike), and a 15 minute run (as many laps as you can).

Richelle believes there should be as few barriers as possible to get into triathlon. Fitspeek agrees! That’s why we are teaming up to give you and a girlfriend A FREE PAIR OF ENTRIES to the event.

To win, simply email fitspeek@gmail.com and tell me the answer to this question, “what is Richelle’s last name?”

On the podcast this week, Richelle and I have a very high-energy discussion on topics ranging from horses to race t-shirts to dinosaur-infused fondos to her history in triathlon. Fitspeek 224: Ultra Swimming Champs Charlie Bourne + Dave Michael

In the world of endurance sports, ultra swimmers are unique athletes. Although in ultra cycling and running you are up against the elements, few challenges can compare with the force of waves battering you for hours on end.

On this week’s show, we spotlight two of B.C.’s top ultra swimmers, both hailing from Penticton. Charlie Bourne captured the 12K title at the Skaha Lake Ultra, while Dave Michael topped the 18K field at the Big Effort Swim in Christina Lake. Two local athletes, two big wins but that’s probably where the similarities end. Charlie is a high school student, whereas Dave just sent his kids off to university this week. Hear their stories about what motivated them to attempt their big swims, how they prepared, and what their race days were like by pressing play below.

If it’s time to replace your bike rack Swagman has you covered, even if you don’t have a hitch connector.
