Fitspeek Goes Ultra: Part B with Larry Ryan. Top 5 Ultra Stories of 2025

What’s with the volcano? Well, it could represent the big climb that is featured at the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. It could also refer to the blow-up or conflict in the Ultra World in 2025.

This week’s Fitspeek returns to the world of ultra-triathlon, spotlighting the top five events that made news. Our guest is Larry Ryan, host of the Ultra 515 podcast.

It turns out 2025 was a fascinating year in ultra-triathlon, marked by standout performances—including Max Knaizev’s dominant win at the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. But beneath Ultraman’s familiar halo of ohana, tensions surfaced. Behind the scenes at Ultraman Florida, a growing rift between brand owners, race directors, and athletes was suddenly exposed.

Even though our guest, Larry Ryan, has never raced an Ultraman himself, he’s very much an ultra guy in his own right. Last year, he pulled off a massively impressive feat—an audio and video livestream covering the entire Ultraman Australia event. It was well received by the ultra community, and he’s doing it again this year.

A Stranger in a Strange Land. Fitspeek 183 – Hydrosloth Goes to IM World Championships. Guest Interviewers Call BS!

This week on the show the tables are turned as Fitspeek alumni Leigh-Ann Parker, Kevin Watt, + Dr. E, interview host Kevin Heinze, about his experiences at the Ironman World Championships, in Nice, France.

A major part of the interview is finding out how he qualified for France because being a hydrosloth and giving up 10 minutes to his age group competition in the water, meant that time had to be made up…somewhere! Find out what sacrifices were made in the heat of the battle when he found out that he was in 3rd place in his age group.

Here’s the bike I used to get to Nice and tackle the course in France. It’s the SP by A Squared. Click on it to browse and configure your dream machine. Thanks to Mark Mattecheck at A2 for “Borris.”

Fitspeek 182: Penticton roundtable

Penticton has long been known as one of Canada’s multisport capitals and it’s not just because of the geography. The city has a tireless army of volunteers that get behind everything that a race organizer could want whether that’s an ultra swim, gravel race, fondo, or triathlon.

In addition to the volunteers, Penticton is home to numerous multisport personalities. In this week’s show, we have a chat with locals Steve King, Jen Annett, and Jeff Symonds. They all played a major role in the latest Peach Classic Triathlon. We talk about that, as well as what’s been going on in their non-tri-lives. Hear about it now by pressing play below.

Boston Bound With Kelly Kallevig: Fitspeek 173

People participate in long-distance running for many reasons, there’s both the mental + physical benefits, as well as (for some runners) the social aspects.

For some runners who get into competing, one of the big deals in the sport is of course the Boston Marathon. But unlike most running events, you need to qualify for the race by finishing under a certain time. Chilliwack’s Kelly Kallevig came very close a couple of times but fell short of the mark. A new race strategy + a new race course was the approach that succeeded for Kelly in her third attempt to qualify for Boston. On the show this week we get to know Kelly’s progression as a long-distance runner and her advice for 1st – time marathoners.

Also on the show the latest episode of The 3 Rs with Abbotsford Triathlon Coach Mikey Ross. Just how much time should you be investing into your weight-lifting routine? Mikey gives us the latest research! Hear it all by pressing play below

Tested in the tunnel, aero + affordable here’s the RP of your dreams. And remember to use the Fitspeek 22 code to save $200.00 of your bike.

Hurricanes, Floods and Fitspeek 147

Another day at the office for the Fitspeek Staff (top of Yellow Lake)

It’s been far too long since we got the Fitspeek folks together for a good ole fashioned roundtable.

On the program today we talk to co-host Kevin Watt about his experiences being an outdoorsy construction guy and working in the unsavoury Fraser Valley weather that we have been having.

Also, along with KW, is our guy for all things cycling and pro triathlon, Roy McBeth. Roy is a rockin’ fast guy and raced at the recent World 70.3 (that’s Half-Ironman) Championships in St. George Utah. He’ll be telling us about his experiences on that day.

As if the high level of competition and difficult topography wasn’t enough, Mother Nature decided to throw Roy and the other racers a major curveball in the form of a short little hurricane. Thankfully Roy, unlike some of his competitors, didn’t get thrown into the ditch.

Roy, who is on the Spaero and F2C elite teams will also be talking about some of the cyclocross events that have been happening here in the Fraser Valley and around the world. Fitspeek 147, with all the news that is fit to podcast is yours with a button click below.

Can I race again please? (Fitspeek 137 with Jen Annett)

This weekend marks the return to racing for Penticton pro Jen Annett. The Ironman 70.3 event will be a chance for her to blow off 20 months of race rust and to test her legs and transition skills.

In our 20- minute chat we discuss heat training, camping, motherhood, and her very personable coach, Jonathan Caron. Also on the show, ATC’s Mikey Ross has been watching the Olympics. And although he hasn’t bought his Blummenfelt is Best t-shirt, he has been inspired by the athletes, both on the field and off. Hear his opinions now by pressing play below!

Tapering 201 = Fitspeek 94: A Conversation with Lifesport’s Lance Watson

In his over 25 years as a triathlon coach, Victoria’s Lance Watson has been helping athletes become faster and more consistent. He’s also part of the story for one of the greatest moments in triathlon ever

Paul Henderson scored “The Goal”. Simon Whitfield scored “The Gold.”

One of the keys to Simon Whitfield’s success in the inaugural Olympic Triathlon in Sydney, back in 2020, was a well-designed & executed taper!

In Fitspeek 94, we get the scoop on what Lance did to help maximize Simon’s chances for success on that magical day.

In addition to coaching Olympic bound, short-course athletes, Watson has also coached one of Canada’s most successful long-course triathletes, Lisa Bentley. In the interview we’ll find out the difference between a front-end taper and a back-end taper.

Sometimes race results are baffling, this guy defied the odds, and logic as he bounced back from a case of shingles to not only an Ironman win, but the record for the fastest Ironman time for a rookie. Brent McMahon’s performance at Ironman Arizona in 2014 is proof that sometimes magic can happen on the race course!
