1 man, 43 years, 1000 stories. Fitspeek 148 with Bruce Wenting

A lot has changed in bicycles and the cycling industry in the past 4 decades and Mission’s Bruce Wenting has been there every step of the way.

As the owner of Wentings Cycle & Mountain shop, for 43 years, Bruce has seen and heard and done it all when it comes to self-powered 2 wheeled vehicles. But there’s a lot more to this guy than Shimano and Orbea and in our end of the year chat with Bruce you will find out what.

Also on the program, the Head Coach for the Abbotsford Triathlon Club, Mikey Ross is back with another Top Five List.

Although Western Canada has been experiencing some dreadful weather recently, Coach Mikey gives us reasons why we should layer up and head out the door, for at least some of our runs. Hear this week’s program now by pressing the play button below.

Fitspeek 142: A magic act – 30 minutes with race director Trevor Sol

Your Fitspeek Friday drops in on this wet weekend with a great conversation with a guy whose middle name should be “git er dun.”

As you may know, the Vancouver Triathlon was held, as a TRIathlon and not an aquathon last month. No small feat with all the challenges of Covid-19 protocols.

Add to the mix, the morons who thought it would be fun to start feeding coyotes to set up their perfect social media shots, turning these usually elusive critters into a dangerous nuisance in Stanley Park. Heaven help us when these bozos start chumming the orcas! In our conversation, we talk to Trevor about those last stressful days leading up to the race. Talk about pulling a rabbit out of a hat. And although you can’t satisfy everybody, the fact that the race went ahead was a welcome breath of fresh air in a very stagnant smelling 2021 race season.

Also in the interview, we ask an obvious question “why the hell would you want to be a race director?” as well as the obvious follow up question, “what does a race director do to feed his family (pictured above) when they ain’t no racing?” All this and more including references to Fitspeek’s big BOY brother, and Mikey’s Top Five List, comes your way with the push of that button you see below.

Last Man Standing. Fitspeek 138 with Ed Wong.

If you did your first Ironman Canada this year, you would have to be doing one every year until 2053, if you wanted to match the current record of Seattle’s Ed Wong.

As one of the pioneers in long-distance triathlon, Wong used his background as a hospital pharmacist to devise a sound nutritional strategy that served him well in his 31 consecutive iron-distance events that included both Penticton and Whistler.

Wong, along with Ed Russell from Kamloops and Dick Ensslen from Edmonton, collectively known as the “Dick Eds” have done almost 100 Ironman Canada races between the three of them, becoming an inspiration for athletes of all ages. You can find out why the DickEds got their name, and how this episode got its name by pressing play below.

That’s high test refreshment for a guy who pushes the boundaries of endurance.

Fitspeek 102: Russ Esau Moving at the Speed of Life

Being the owner of a successful construction company has got to put limits on a person’s training time but that hasn’t slowed down Abbotsford’s Russ Esau a bit. Not only is he a virtual shoo-in for the podium at any triathlon or running event in the 50-54 age group, he also can capture the overall.

In Fitspeek 102, we introduce you to the Abbotsford fast-man who speaks softly and carries lethal foot-speed. At the very competitive Pacific First Half-Marathon he won his age group with an other worldly 1:14:03

In the program we delve into his background in sports before running and try to find out his secrets for being such a fast runner and cyclist (not so much a swimmer). Listening hint: Due to the producer’s poor microphone placement, you may have to turn up the treble on this one. My apologies.

And yes the guy in the middle, does still work for the fine folks at the Bike Barn in Penticton. In our interview we catch up with Jeff about how thinks the life as a pro triathlete is not that dissimilar from the social distancing protocol that we are all following nowadays. We talk about his role as a swimming coach in Penticton . We also talk about this

Fitspeek 98: Report From Barcelona with Ramon Lopez Mendizabal

Ramon Lopez-Mendizabal is a civil engineer and an elite ultra-endurance triathlete from Barcelona, Spain. As you know that iconic Spanish city is one of the places hardest hit by the Covid-19 virus.

In Fitspeek 98, we speak with Ramon about how he & his wife are leading their day to day lives while living under the restrictions placed on them in that European country. One of the answers for Ramon is buying a treadmill and then running a marathon on it for three consecutive days . He’s also putting in some very impressive hours on the trainer. (old school style, no Rouvey, no Zwift).

In addition to our interview with Ramon, we get an update all the way from Port Coquitlam. Kevin Watt tells us about his experiences on the trails there and how his day job is largely unaffected by this health crisis.

Hanging out with the usual suspects by the Big Peach. Last Sunday in August, 2018.

To round off the program Zack Neufeld is back with another Between the Ears segment. Zack gives us some advice on how to set realistic goals and maintain our motivation during these challenging days. Hear it all now by pressing that button below.
